#129: Indistractable by Bestselling Author Nir Eyal (How to Be More Focused in Work and Life)

About the Episode:

In today’s episode, we’re talking to Nir Eyal, the author of the brand new book in stores and online this week called Indistractible: How to Control Your Attention and Choose Your Life.

Nir may sound familiar to you because we had him on the podcast a couple of years ago to talk about his bestselling book Hooked: How to Build Habit-Forming Products.

Nir holds an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business where he’s also been a guest lecturer. He’s a behavior investigator, angel investor, and entrepreneur who’s worked with companies like Eventbrite, ProductHunt and many more. Nir’s started two tech companies himself, one of which was a gaming company that got acquired and on top of all this, Nir somehow still finds time to sit down and write about psychology, technology, and business on his blog.

In Today’s Episode, We Talk About:

02:33 What made Nir decide to write his new book.
04:13 His definition of distraction.
[06:52] Why it’s important to know the true meaning of distraction.
[11:32] How to reshape your habits.
[14:44] Tips to help you stay focussed.
[17:07] A change he made in his life that helps him stay focused now.

23:11 How he uses his Gmail account.
24:30 Things he could improve on in terms of his own focus.
26:02 Tips to help you disconnect from work.

  2. There was this philosopher (I think Wittgenstein, but I’m not sure) who was convinced, that most of our personal, interpersonal, political, basically all sorts of problems are due a misunderstanding and an inexact use of words. If we were rigorously to communicate with only the exact meaning of words, most of the problems would just vanish, leaving only true/real problems to solve. Thus, the vague use of words creates pseudo-problem, that actually don’t exist.

Anyways, very interesting interview. The reason I don’t use a calendar is because every day would be filled with “get rich and buy yourself free from the salary slavery” but since I still haven’t figured it out after two decades, it would be kinda meaningless, thus everything becomes a distraction, because there’s no solution I could focus on and create traction from it.
